At Mossy Creek Retrievers, we are dedicated to enhancing the bond between you and your dog through effective training techniques. A variety of approaches will be implemented in order to get the most out of your dog and maximize their full potential. Our mission is to provide personalized training programs that cater to the unique needs of every dog owner.
Trainer Mike has been training labs, running AKC/HRC hunt tests, and a waterfowl guide since 2012. He has trained many dogs that have gone on to succeed at Master/Finished levels in AKC/HRC Hunt tests, the duck blind, or the Pheasant field. He has guided and ran dogs in Arkansas, Mississippi and Oklahoma. His experience in combination with his passion for the sport helps him train high caliber dogs and their owners to reach their full potential.
The Obedience program is a five week course where your dog will be taught the commands: here, sit, heel, kennel, down. After three weeks of on-leash training, the commands will be reinforced with off leash training and collar conditioning.
The Started dog program introduces your dog to the elements of waterfowl hunting. The dog will be introduced to live birds, gunfire, decoys and much more. Additionally, the dog will go through obedience training, collar conditioning and force fetch. After force fetch, we will carry it to the field where your dog will be steadied to wing and shot. Training will be reinforced in multiple water and land hunting scenarios. Upon completion of the program, your dog will be ready to run in an AKC/HRC Started/Junior hunt test.
The Advanced gun dog program is where we build upon the foundation that was established in the Started Program. Your dog will learn many tasks such as: multiple marking (doubles & triples), honoring, diversion birds, walk-ups, whistle-sit, casting, blind running and more. These skills will be reinforced in a variety of challenging setups in the field, drills and yard work sessions. Upon completion of the program, your dog will be ready to run AKC/HRC Master/Finished hunt test.
Upon completion of the Started program, in the Upland program your dog will learn how to quarter a field while working with a handler, sit on the whistle, flush game and retrieve to hand. Graduates of the program will be ready to run an HRC Upland hunt test.
After your Mossy Dog finishes their level of training, it's time to get them in the field. Mossy Creek provides a couple of different opportunities to get your dog on some birds. Whether it's shooting Specklebellies in Mississippi, chasing puddle ducks in Oklahoma, or flushing pheasant in Kentucky, there are opportunities to put the training into action.
